Let’s talk about periods
“Menstruating people should not be allowed in kitchen or the temple”
“Menstruation is unhygienic and unclean”
“Periods are impure, don’t talk about them”
No..Let’s talk about periods..
Lets talk about the years of taboo, social stigma, and embarrassment that women have gone through because of the inappropriate culture and infrastructure towards periods.
Such taboos impact menstruating people’s emotional state, mentality and lifestyle and most importantly, health.
Many girls dropout of schools once they start menstruating, Over 77% of menstruating people in India use an old cloth, which is often reused.
This is further augmented by the lack of knowledge about puberty and periods..what exactly are they, why do they occur etc.
If somebody started bleeding without any information or knowledge they would be freaked out..regardless of how they identify.
People can also face stigma and mistreatment for not having periods. Those who do not menstruate may be labeled as “not real women.” People who do not have monthly menstruation, such as those who have irregular periods or those who don’t identify as women but go through this cycle, can be affected by these views.
-A major part of this can be solved by educating all genders about menstruation in early stages so that everyone can grow up with comfortably talking about periods and not making it a social stain.
-Providing menstruating people with the required sanitary products and giving them the privacy and safety that they deserve is another important aspect.
-Providing them with access to healthcare and information incase of menstruation-related disorders or pain can help in solving many problems from becoming worse and ensuring period safety
Periods are an actual, real thing that exist. If you’re still not convinced, try telling someone 5 good points about why periods shouldn’t be discussed (saying that they’re gross isn’t a vlid point). Forget about the absurd stories or so called facts that you’ve heard growing up and read up on actual facts. It won’t hurt you to understand 50% of the population. Ask questions. Don’t make it taboo..when someone is talking to you about their periods, do not make them feel uncomfortable. The reproductive system of women is the foundation of life. Periods are a necessary part of the system’s operation. Periods are absolutely normal.
Its the 21st Century..Lets talk about periods.
